The first investment of the Isaiah Funds will be to the Gulf Coast Housing Partnership (GCHP) for an innovative housing project. The $500,000 investment will be used for a mixed-income rental housing development with 87 units of affordable housing.
This project will link Central City, a once vibrant working class and low-income African-American commercial corridor, with the nationally-known St. Charles Boulevard. Central City is currently the site of several important projects for affordable housing and commercial redevelopment. These efforts will help attract economic activity from the wealthy Lower Garden District to Central City.
The Gulf Coast Housing Partnership, a non-profit real estate development company, is one of the most effective housing producers in the region. Since Katrina, they have completed 600 units of affordable housing to advance Gulf Coast redevelopment and are currently building another 500 units. In particular, GCHP is playing a major role in building multi-unit housing and mixed-use properties in Central City to support redevelopment of the Oretha Castle Boulevard, the neighborhood’s most important commercial corridor.
