About Tremé
Tremé is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans and was a community of free African Americans during slavery. It remains an important center of the city’s African American and Créole culture and is considered the home of the brass band. Like Central City, Tremé also experienced decline beginning in the 1960s with the construction of Interstate 10, which sliced through the middle of the community. Tremé has received increased visibility recently through the HBO series Treme.
